Big Sur Visitor Bureau - Big Sur Marathon

The Big Sur International Marathon is a race, for sure, but for locals it's an event that magnetizes the entire region, from the Monterey Peninsula down the coast to Big Sur.

The 26.2 mile course was called one of the top three marathons in the country by
Runner's World magazine, behind only Boston and New York. Started in 1986, the Big Sur Marathon is a spectacular run beginning in Big Sur and ending in Carmel with scenery, cliffs, ocean and green hills that will take your breath away. And for a special treat, live entertainment is performed along the route, from the classic and infamous grand piano at Bixby Bridge to Taiko drummers and belly dancers. You can't duplicate this. There's nothing like it in the whole, wide world...

Spectators are allowed at the finish line. Or, if you stay on the side of the road (Highway 1) you can walk south and see what the runners see, a rocky shore, high cliffs, and blue sea. Cars are not allowed on the road while the race is underway.

Marathon weekend is a celebration of Big Sur, life, and good health. There are many events, for kids, "off-road" runners and families. Staffed by Marathon organizers helped by volunteers, the Big Sur Marathon race weekend welcomes runners of all ages and skill levels and appreciates and encourages spectators from all over the world.

In 2013, the marathon is on Saturday, April 28. The festivities last all weekend, with pasta parties, training seminars, fitness clinics, a health & fitness expo at the Monterey Conference Center (Friday and Saturday) and a post race party on Sunday, April 29.
